Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:

  • Community and Family Studies
  • Exploring Early Childhood
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
  • Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies.

PDHPE is an important and dynamic Key Learning Area that advocates for fitness, good health and positive wellbeing.

The PDHPE KLA offers students a wide range of experiences in healthy living, sports, recreation, coaching, administration and first aid. We have devised a comprehensive curriculum that specifically caters for the needs and interests of our students. We consistently work to maximise the learning outcomes of the students by regularly updating curriculum and resources. We provide a wide range of quality learning experiences in a safe and supportive environment aimed at developing the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to understand, value and lead a healthy lifestyle now and in the future.

The PDHPE KLA provides an extensive range of courses available to all students at Byron Bay High School.

PDHPE facilities at Byron Bay High School

Byron Bay High School has some of the best sporting facilities of any public high school in the state.

The impressive facilities available include:

  • Sports Centre with fully equipped fitness gym and cardio room – includes a large Fitness circuit area, free and fixed weights, squat racks, ergometers and also catering for table tennis and indoor games/activities for other PDHPE lessons.
  • School Oval consisting of a full size soccer field and athletics track with a long jump pit.
  • Two Outdoor synthetic Basketball and Netball Courts.
  • Multi Purpose Centre with Basketball, Volleyball and Badminton courts as well as 4 change room facilities and 2 equipment storerooms.
  • Two PDHPE classroom with computers, smart board, video and conferencing resources, Laptop COW, 65" touch screen TV and refurbished classroom
