Science is mandatory for all students from Year 7 to Year 10.
Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.
In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Earth and Environmental Science
- Investigating Science
- Physics.
In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.

All Science and Agriculture Teachers are using the 5E's model for Quality Teaching and Learning at Byron Bay High School.
The 5E's model is internationally recognised as "best practice" in Science Education and in brief, requires that teachers plan learning experiences that ENGAGE students, allow them to EXPLORE Science using investigations, then give students the chance to EXPLAIN their understandings followed by ELABORATION and EVALUATION of these concepts. This ensures all students receive the best possible educational gains and enjoy Science for the practical, exciting and inquisitive subject it is.

All junior years of Science are comprised of a mixture of different "Strands" of Science. In each year, students will usually study two topics from each of the four strands, totalling 8 different learning topics per year.
The Strands of Science are Physical World (PW), Chemical World (CW), Living World (LW) and Earth & Space (ES). Keep an eye out for these Strands and their abbreviations.
